Education As Identity
"In Washington, D.C., 94 percent of children were black or Hispanic, less than 5 percent were white." The facts that the author was writing about stood out to me tremendously in the reading. I believe that the facts will help me complete my opinion on whether or not a students success is linked to his/her social class. There are many other important facts to back up my opinion along with this one.
Along with the last quote, an important fact that I believe will be supportive to my argument is, "There is a high school in Cleveland that is named for Dr. King in which black students make up 97 percent of the student body, and the graduation rate is only 35 percent". This shows the shear facts of the percent of students graduating in the black dominated high schools.
"In one makeshift elementary schoolhouses in a former skating rink next to a funeral establishment in yet another nearly all-black-and-Hispanic section of the Bronx, class six rose to thirty-four and more; four kindergarten classes and a sixth grade class were packed into a single room that had no windows". The quote shows how terrible the conditions were for the students, personally I could not imagine attempting to stay focused in class with four other teachers teaching their students at the same time.
"We do not have the things you have. You have clean things. We do not have. Can you help us?", is a quote that stood out to me from the reading. A young third grader wrote this in a letter to a white man attempting to get help for her school, to make it a better and more "beautiful" place. This quote will help me distinguish my argument in my essay.
